Volunteers Making Our Lake Better!
The Kashwakamak Lake Association represents the interests of its members at township meetings and with federal and provincial politicians. Areas of interest include the environment, water safety, public health, lake stewardship and member education. Issues on which we have lobbied include market value assessment, lakefront purchase, proxy voting, and municipal services.
The KLA also organizes social opportunities for its members:
- Join us for the KLA Annual General Meeting on July 13th, 2024 at the Lions Hall in Northbrook. The door opens at 9 am.
- We hold the popular Annual Dinner/Charity Auction at Fernleigh Lodge with proceeds from the auction supporting a local charity. The 2024 event will take place on September 21st. Tickets go on sale at the Annual General Meeting.
- KLA members also receive the electronic newsletter, The Kash Kourier each June and October. You can check past issues on the Members page. Members can opt to get a printed copy of the newsletters mailed to them for only $20/year. They are a great addition to your coffee table at the lake. Interested? Contact Email.
History of the Board
The Kashwakamak Lake Association was originally formed in 1993 to represent the interests of property owners in Barrie Township at the west end of Kashwakamak Lake. In July 2000, it was voted at the Annual Meeting to include all of Kashwakamak Lake. The Association represents the interests of its members at township meetings and with federal and provincial politicians. Areas of interest include the environment, water safety, public health, lake stewardship and member education. Issues on which we have lobbied include: market value assessment, lakefront purchase, proxy voting, and municipal services.

Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Associations
The KLA members are also members of Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Associations (FOCA). FOCA is a non-profit, voluntary organization that represents 600 cottage associations. It represents cottagers in dealings with government and industry, to ensure cottaging will remain a way of life in Ontario. It also serves as an information centre for cottage associations and provides assistance and leadership on many crucial issues affecting cottagers while encouraging good environmental stewardship. www.foca.on.ca
Mississippi Valley Conservation
The KLA works closely with the Mississippi Valley Conservation (MVC) on water quality testing and lake stewardship. The MVC is a community-based environmental agency established under the Conservation Authorities Act in 1968. To maintain recreational lake levels and control flooding, MVC operates a series of dams, including one at the east end of Kashwakamak Lake. MVC works to protect the natural resources of the Mississippi watershed, a jurisdiction of 4,450 square kilometres. www.mvc.on.ca
North Frontenac Township
North Frontenac is in the heart of eastern Ontario’s cottage country. Cottages and campsites dot the shores of the Township’s many clean lakes. Located entirely on the Canadian Shield, the landscape can often be rough and unpredictable, but at the same time provide for scenic backdrops and vistas. The natural beauty of North Frontenac is what most residents love about the area. Lake Networking Group
Representatives from the Kashwakamak Lake Association recently joined the Lake Networking Group. The Lake Networking Group is an informal gathering of Eastern Ontario Lake association representatives united by a common desire to work together and learn from one another. North Frontenac Lake Association Alliance
In November 2010, Kashwakamak Lake Association became one of the founding members of the newly formed alliance of lake associations. The North Frontenac Lake Association (NFLAA) is presently made up of 15 member lake associations with three more lakes awaiting ratification from their associations. The mandate of the alliance is to build relationships and partnerships with Municipalities, Government Agencies and appropriate community associations.
The NFLAA is an important alliance that can help members and in turn, KLA members can get have concerns heard at a broader level with a unified approach. The KLA’s President, Gordon Hunter is the KLA representative on the NFLAA. With KLA membership nearing 400 added to the membership of the 15 other lake associations, the NFLAA is our representation within the North Frontenac community and at the township level. All members are also part of the Federation of Ontario Cottage Associations (FOCA) at the provincial level.
